Coca-Cola Introduces Single-Serve Mini Cans for Grab-and-Go Convenience
Coca-Cola is set to launch single-serve versions of its popular sodas in 7.5-ounce mini cans, catering to consumers looking for a more affordable grab-and-go option. These mini cans will be available in convenience stores nationwide starting in January. While the smaller portion size has been available in grocery stores for over a decade, it was previously only sold in multipack format.
According to the beverage giant, mini cans currently account for more than 9% of the sparkling soft drink mix in large stores. In a recent pilot, the single-serve mini cans demonstrated strong sales without negatively impacting Coca-Cola’s larger format sales.
In response to consumer preferences and the current economic climate marked by inflation, food and beverage companies are adjusting their portion sizes to provide better value to customers. By offering a range of mini and bulk sizes, companies are helping shoppers make their dollars go further.
Joel Bishop, president of commercial leadership of Coca-Cola’s North America Operating Unit, emphasized the importance of providing consumers with options that allow them to enjoy Coca-Cola on their terms. The mini versions will be available in c-stores in original Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, Coca-Cola Cherry, Sprite, and Fanta Orange, with a suggested retail price of $1.29 per can.
In addition to offering a more affordable price point, smaller sizes also appeal to health-conscious consumers seeking moderation in their indulgences. The rise of GLP-1 medications for weight loss has led to a decline in the consumption of sugary snacks and beverages, prompting more consumers to opt for smaller portion sizes. Coca-Cola also sees the smaller size as an opportunity to introduce consumers to new flavors.
The company believes that the smaller format aligns with the shopping habits of convenience store customers, with over half of mini can buyers also purchasing a snack. Coca-Cola aims to drive sales and awareness of new flavors while increasing purchases of its iconic sodas through the introduction of mini cans in these stores.
“Convenience stores are where many of today’s quick decisions happen, and the cold vault plays a big role in those moments,” Bishop stated. “By introducing mini cans into that space, we’re giving shoppers more choice and making Coca-Cola easier to enjoy and more accessible for the next generation.”
In addition to the mini cans, Coca-Cola announced the launch of a new flavor, Coca-Cola Cherry Float, in February, available in various sizes including mini cans. Another rotating flavor, Sprite Winter Spiced Cranberry, which features spices and cranberry flavors added to the original lemon-lime taste, will also be available in a smaller quantity.
Overall, Coca-Cola’s introduction of single-serve mini cans reflects the company’s commitment to meeting consumer demand for convenience, affordability, and variety in their beverage choices.
