If you recently purchased a bag of ground coffee, it’s time to check your pantry for an important recall. On March 13, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a recall for 12-ounce bags of Our Family-branded Traverse City Cherry artificially flavored decaf light roast ground coffee, manufactured by Massimo Zanetti Beverage. The reason for the recall is that some bags may have been mislabeled as “decaffeinated.”
The FDA assigned a Class II designation to the recall on March 25, indicating that the use of or exposure to the violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, with the probability of serious adverse health consequences being remote. The recall affects 692 cases, each containing six 12-ounce bags, totaling 4,152 individual packages. The product has the UPC code “0 70253 11080 1” printed on it and is marked with a “best before” date of August 3, 2025.
The product was sold in 15 states across the United States, including Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. If you have any of the recalled product, it is advisable to dispose of it or return it to the place of purchase.
Caffeine can pose risks to individuals with certain medical conditions or those taking specific medications. Some may experience adverse effects such as high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, or seizures when consuming caffeine. It’s important to note that decaffeinated coffee still contains some caffeine, albeit in smaller amounts.
Dr. Stephen Devries, a preventive cardiologist, highlighted that decaffeinated coffee has only slightly lower levels of polyphenols compared to regular coffee. Dr. Shannon Kilgore, a neurologist, emphasized that while decaffeinated coffee contains significantly less caffeine than regular coffee, it is not entirely caffeine-free.
Before consuming coffee, whether decaf or regular, it’s essential to consult with your doctor, especially if you are taking any new medications. Remember to check your pantry for the recalled product and take necessary precautions when consuming coffee.
