Tele-mental health provider Cerebral has made a significant move in the industry by acquiring Resilience Lab, a therapy and medication management provider based in New York City. This acquisition marks Cerebral’s first since its founding in 2020, and the terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
Resilience Lab has distinguished itself by focusing on building a proprietary clinician development platform aimed at reducing psychiatrist and therapist turnover and burnout. Their intensive training methodology for early-career therapists equips them with clinical training and structured protocols to enhance their foundational skills. Cerebral plans to integrate these assets into its existing framework to upskill its current clinicians and elevate itself as a “center of excellence for clinical care.”
CEO Brian Reinken expressed that the acquisition will allow patients to have a Cerebral provider and prescriber collaborate on prescribing and diagnosis decisions. This move comes after Cerebral faced fines and penalties from the Federal Trade Commission in recent years, and Reinken believes it will position the company better for consistency and quality in their services.
The integration of Resilience Lab’s methodologies for early-career and seasoned therapists will bring about changes for employees, along with the creation of the “Cerebral Institute” as the new online training entity for the combined company. With the addition of Resilience Lab, Cerebral will also benefit from AI capabilities to improve diagnostic tools for clinicians.
Marc Goldberg, co-founder of Resilience Lab and now president of Cerebral, emphasized the focus on building the best environment for clinicians to deliver the best care. The company will continue its work with payers to track outcomes and improvements on both the clinician and provider side.
This acquisition is a strategic move for Cerebral, as it marks the company’s first transaction in the industry. Resilience Lab, on the other hand, has previous experience in mergers and acquisitions, having acquired AI-enabled psychiatry provider Options MD in October 2024. The alignment of philosophies between the two companies has been a driving force behind their successful integration.
Despite facing challenges in the past, including significant layoffs and legal troubles with former executives, Cerebral is forging ahead with its commitment to quality care and outcomes in the mental health space. The acquisition of Resilience Lab signals a new chapter for the company as it aims to provide top-notch services and support for both clinicians and patients.
