Community Health Systems subsidiary Northwest Urgent Care has successfully finalized the acquisition of urgent care centers previously owned and operated by Carbon Health in Arizona. This acquisition marks a significant step for Northwest Healthcare, a part of the integrated network serving Tucson and its surrounding communities. With this acquisition, Northwest Healthcare now boasts a network of over 80 sites of care in the region, as reported by CHS.
Investing in Growth
Over the last five years, Northwest Healthcare has made substantial investments totaling an estimated $200 million in strategic growth and capital projects within the Greater Tucson Metro area. This includes the establishment of hospitals such as Northwest Medical Center Sahuarita and Northwest Medical Center Houghton, further enhancing the healthcare offerings in the region.
Strategic Deals for CHS
Community Health Systems has been actively engaged in strategic deals to address its financial outlook, including the sale of hospitals to alleviate a significant portion of its $11 billion debt burden. Recent developments include the cancellation of a $120 million deal to sell three hospitals in Pennsylvania to Woodbridge Healthcare due to funding constraints on WoodBridge’s end.
Furthermore, CHS announced the sale of ShorePoint Health Port Charlotte and ShorePoint Health Punta Gorda in Florida, along with certain ancillary businesses, to subsidiaries of Adventist Health System Sunbelt Healthcare Corporation for $265 million in cash. The transaction is anticipated to be finalized in the first quarter of 2025.
Financial Performance and Outlook
In its latest financial report, CHS disclosed a net loss attributable to Community Health Systems stockholders of $391 million for the quarter, compared to $91 million in the same period the previous year. The third-quarter results were impacted by factors such as increased denials and downgrades by insurers, as well as the financial repercussions of consecutive hurricanes.
Headquartered in Franklin, Tennessee, Community Health Systems is one of the largest for-profit healthcare providers in the country, operating across 15 states. The company’s subsidiaries oversee a portfolio of 70 affiliated hospitals, contributing to their extensive presence in the healthcare industry.
