Ohio’s Cleveland Clinic Partners with Miami University to Advance Quantum Education
Cleveland Clinic, a pioneer in healthcare quantum computing applications, has joined forces with Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, to propel quantum education in the state.
Why It’s Important
The collaboration aims to establish Ohio’s inaugural specialized degree programs and research opportunities in quantum computing. The focus is on nurturing scientific and entrepreneurial talent to drive the growth of companies, elevate businesses, and propel organizations that leverage quantum computing.
The program will offer specialized degree programs spanning various computing platforms, including classical systems, advanced high-performance computing, and quantum computing techniques. Bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees will be available, with a specific emphasis on practical applications in healthcare and life sciences.
Students at Miami University will have the chance to explore biomedical research utilizing Cleveland Clinic’s IBM Quantum System One. They will develop expertise in computing, biomedical engineering, biochemistry, and premed studies.
Furthermore, Miami University students will have access to internships at Cleveland Clinic, while researchers and clinicians from Cleveland Clinic may take on adjunct positions at the university. A physical presence adjacent to Cleveland Clinic’s main campus will facilitate closer collaboration for research innovation and job creation.
The goal is to equip students to lead in quantum computing applications and development, providing them with the ethical and moral reasoning skills essential for the quantum field and enabling them to drive innovation in this emerging technology.
The Ongoing Trend
Cleveland Clinic has a longstanding reputation in biomedical research. Since initiating its quantum computing partnership with IBM in 2021, the health system has progressed to develop and deploy the 127-qubit Quantum System One – the world’s first quantum computer entirely dedicated to healthcare research – which was unveiled in 2023.
In the same year, Cleveland Clinic and IBM announced various healthcare quantum computing projects and committed to offering quantum resources to startups. Over the summer, the health system introduced a new quantum computing and AI fellowship in collaboration with the Novo Nordisk Foundation.
Statements from the Leaders
“This new educational collaboration enhances Cleveland Clinic’s standing as a frontrunner in healthcare innovation and the emerging quantum computing sector,” stated Cleveland Clinic CEO Dr. Tom Mihaljevic. “By partnering with Miami University, we are establishing a robust ecosystem that will attract, educate, and retain top talent, while offering unparalleled opportunities for innovation.”
“This synergistic partnership will position Ohio as a global leader in quantum computing,” added Miami President Gregory Crawford. “We are excited to collaborate closely with Cleveland Clinic researchers, who are leading the charge in this burgeoning technology. By combining the educational, research, and healthcare expertise of Miami University and Cleveland Clinic, we are accelerating the cutting-edge potential of quantum computing to shape the future of healthcare and technology.”
