As the sun blazes overhead and the days stretch longer, it’s clear that summer has arrived. And with the arrival of summer comes the inevitable migration of restaurant customers to the patio for some al fresco dining. While restaurant staff do their best to create a pleasant outdoor dining experience, there are some things that are simply out of their control.
One thing to remember is that the weather will be what it will be, whether you like it or not. While patio dining may have umbrellas or cooling misters, the temperature is ultimately controlled by Mother Nature. So, if it’s hot when you step inside from outside, chances are it’s equally hot on the patio. Complaining or rolling your eyes won’t change the weather. And don’t expect restaurant staff to predict the weather for you – use a weather app or watch the news instead.
Additionally, be prepared for the elements of wind and sun. A perfectly positioned beam of sunlight reflecting off a knife can disrupt your meal, and the shade provided by an umbrella may not last as the sun moves across the sky. Wind can also be a factor, so be grateful if it only blows away your napkin and not your entire meal.
If you choose to dine on the patio, be aware that insects may also make an appearance. It’s their world, after all, and a fly landing in your drink is just part of the experience. While you can ask for a replacement cocktail, there’s no guarantee it will happen. Think of it as a cookout with some extra guests.
Once you’ve chosen to sit outside, be prepared to weather the elements. If it becomes too hot, windy, bright, or buggy, there may not be another table available inside. Make your choice wisely and be prepared for the possibility of the air conditioning inside being set to Arctic temperatures. Bring a sweater just in case.
Overall, dining outside during the summer can be a delightful experience. Just remember to embrace the unpredictability of nature and approach your outdoor meal with grace and flexibility.
