The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently upgraded a recall for Dr Pepper Zero Sugar due to critical mislabeling. The initial voluntary recall, issued on May 23, involved more than 19,000 cans of Dr Pepper Zero Sugar that were labeled as sugar-free but were later found to contain the full amount of sugar found in classic Dr Pepper. This mislabeling poses a potential health risk, especially for individuals who are sensitive to sugar, such as those with diabetes.
On June 5, the FDA reclassified the recall as a Class II, meaning that exposure to the violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, with a remote probability of serious adverse health consequences. The recall includes 19,203 cans packaged in 12- or 24-pack cases of 12-fluid-ounce cans, with the product code XXXXRS05165 and a “Best By” date of February 16, 2026. These cans were distributed in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina.
Consumers who have purchased the recalled product are advised to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. In addition to the Dr Pepper recall, Coca-Cola also issued a voluntary recall of its Topo Chico mineral water in five states due to concerns about potential Pseudomonas contamination, which can be dangerous for individuals with weakened immune systems.
While it may appear that there has been an increase in food and beverage recalls, the actual number of recalls has declined. However, the number of hospitalizations associated with recalls has increased year-over-year. In 2024, there were 487 hospitalizations and 19 deaths related to recalled items, highlighting the importance of taking recalls seriously and seeking medical attention if necessary.
It is crucial for consumers to stay informed about product recalls and to take appropriate action if they have purchased or consumed a recalled item. By following the guidelines provided by the FDA and manufacturers, consumers can protect themselves and their families from potential health risks associated with mislabeled or contaminated products.
