The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently issued a recall for cucumbers grown by Bedner Growers and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales due to potential Salmonella contamination. This recall affects cucumbers that were distributed starting on April 29, 2025, with distribution still ongoing. The FDA stated that cucumbers distributed before this date should no longer be available on the market.
The CDC has reported that the ongoing Salmonella outbreak linked to these cucumbers has resulted in 26 illnesses and nine hospitalizations across 15 states. Some of these cases involve cruise ship passengers sailing from Florida ports. The CDC warned that cucumbers still on the market may be within shelf life for the rest of the week.
The cucumbers in question may have been sold individually or in unlabeled packages, making them difficult to identify. However, distributors, restaurants, and retailers who purchased these cucumbers can identify them as “supers,” “selects,” or “plains.” It is crucial for consumers to discard any unverified cucumbers purchased after April 29, 2025.
Symptoms of Salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, with children younger than five, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems being more susceptible to severe infections. Symptoms typically appear within 48 to 72 hours of exposure and can last four to seven days.
The FDA advises individuals who may have consumed these cucumbers to stay vigilant for symptoms and seek medical attention if necessary. If unsure about the origin of cucumbers, it is recommended to discard them. Updates on the investigation can be found on the FDA’s website. Consumers are also advised to inquire about the source of cucumbers when dining out in the coming week to ensure their safety.
