Republican Texas state representative Giovanni Capriglione expressed his lack of faith in the federal government’s ability to create a comprehensive AI framework, citing their inability to do so with privacy regulations. In an interview with a Dallas TV station earlier this year, Capriglione stated, “if Texas were to create an AI framework, it would likely set a precedent for other states to follow, similar to California’s influence in this space.” Currently, Capriglione is circulating a draft AI consumer protections bill that could potentially serve as a model for other red states.
The push for state-level AI regulations underscores the growing concerns around the ethical implications and potential risks associated with AI technology. Lawmakers are recognizing the need to establish guidelines and safeguards to ensure that AI is developed and deployed responsibly.
