Manipal Hospitals Leverages Advanced AI and Data Analytics for Pharmacy Ordering and Nurse Handoff
Manipal Hospitals has recently expanded its utilization of advanced AI and data analytics from Google Cloud to enhance its pharmacy ordering and medication management as well as nurse handoff workflows. The implementation of the ePharmacy platform, powered by Google’s AI assistant, generative AI-driven Gemini, has streamlined prescription processing and ensured accurate drug information transfer. The platform utilizes advanced visual analytics to optimize user behavior monitoring, cart management, delivery tracking, and ordering workflows. It also facilitates the seamless flow of patients’ post-consultation transaction data between different systems via cloud API.
The hospital has reported a significant decrease in order processing time on the ePharmacy platform, reducing it to under five minutes from the previous 15 minutes. With over 60,000 data entries processed daily, the platform runs on Google Kubernetes Engine to handle prescription volume surges during peak demand periods.
Additionally, Manipal Hospitals has implemented a cloud-based handoff platform that provides instant access to critical patient information and streamlines workflow, also powered by genAI. The hospital has seen a 78% reduction in handover duration through this solution, from 90 minutes to 20 minutes, resulting in saving “millions of caregiver minutes monthly.”
The Larger Context
This latest collaboration with Google Cloud builds on Manipal’s existing partnership in 2022 around enabling virtual and remote care. Google Cloud has also partnered with China Medical University Hospital in Taiwan to develop AI assistants powered by MedLM for creating cancer treatment plans and providing general health inquiries to patients. Moreover, Australia-based health IT provider Magentus collaborated with Google Cloud to deploy genAI functionality for extracting insights from unstructured data and generating content.
In a related development, Google Cloud recently released new genAI capabilities in the Vertex AI platform and introduced the new version of Gemini on the machine learning platform.
