Feeling a little blue this holiday season? You’re not alone. The holidays can bring up a mix of emotions, from joy to sadness and everything in between.
If you’re struggling with feelings of loss, loneliness, or stress, it’s important to remember that it’s okay not to feel festive. According to Katie Godshall, a clinical assistant professor in social work at the University of New Hampshire, these feelings are normal and valid.
Here are 15 steps to help ease the holiday blues:
- Try not to feel guilty: It’s okay not to feel jolly. Communicate your feelings and reach out for support.
- Get out and about: Take a walk or exercise to boost your mood.
- Volunteer: Helping others can lift your spirits and make a difference.
- Reach out to someone: Connect with a friend or loved one to talk about how you’re feeling.
- Be kind to yourself: Accept your emotions and find ways to honor loved ones you’re missing.
- Expand your idea of self-care: Simple tasks like making the bed can give you a sense of control.
- Practice moderation: Be mindful of triggers like alcohol that can affect your mood.
- Focus on your breath: Deep breathing can help reduce stress and create calm.
- Tap into your senses: Pay attention to sights, sounds, and smells to stay grounded.
- Check on those around you: Reach out to friends and family who may be struggling.
- Help others who are struggling: Offer support and companionship to those in need.
- Don’t be shy: Be honest and open about how you’re feeling.
- Offer to help: Assist others with tasks or simply be there to listen.
- Notice new symptoms: Watch for signs of depression and seek help if needed.
- Get help if you need it: If you or someone you know is struggling, don’t hesitate to reach out for professional support.
