Plastic contamination has led Wells Enterprises, also known as Wells Dairy, to voluntarily recall 22 different ice cream and frozen yogurt products. This recall was initiated on April 25 and affects products distributed to 103 locations across the U.S.
Recalled Ice Cream And Frozen Yogurt Products
The recalled products, all in three-gallon tubs, include various flavors with unique product codes and lot numbers. Some of the products included in the recall are Rocky Road Flavored Ice Cream, Mocha Almond Fudge Ice Cream, and Peanut Butter ‘N Fudge Ice Cream.
If you have any of these products with “Best If Used By” dates ranging from March 2026 to October 2026, it is advised to return them for a refund or discard them safely to prevent accidental ingestion.
Potential Risks of Ingesting Plastic Fragments
The FDA has classified this recall as Class II, indicating that the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote. While ingesting small plastic fragments may not have immediate toxic effects, larger and sharper pieces could potentially cause harm by cutting through the digestive tract.
If you suspect ingesting plastic, contact a healthcare professional for guidance and be alert for symptoms such as chest or abdominal discomfort, bloating, or blood in the stool.
So far, there have been no reported health consequences from plastic contamination in Wells Dairy products. If the plastic fragments ingested are small and dull, they are likely to pass through the digestive system without causing harm.
