Intermountain Health Names Ryan Smith as New Chief Digital and Information Officer
WHY IT MATTERS
After an extensive nationwide search, Intermountain Health has selected Ryan Smith as its new Chief Digital and Information Officer. Smith, who previously held senior IT leadership roles at the Salt Lake City-based health system for almost 20 years, will assume his new role in early 2025.
Currently serving as the interim president and CEO at Graphite Health, a nonprofit collaborative focusing on standardizing healthcare data, Smith brings a wealth of experience to his new position.
BACKGROUND
Ryan Smith began his career at Intermountain in the mid-90s, holding various roles in data, network, and technology. He later served as the CIO at Banner Health before transitioning to a role at Health Catalyst. Smith returned to Intermountain as CIO during the pandemic and has been with Graphite Health for the past three years.
RESPONSIBILITIES
As the new CDIO at Intermountain, Smith will oversee Digital Technology Services, including DTS Operations, Digital Services, Data Services, Clinical Informatics, Information Security, and Information Technology. He will report to Chief Strategy Officer Dan Liljenquist and be a member of the Enterprise Leadership Team.
RECENT DEVELOPMENTS
Smith’s appointment comes after Intermountain’s merger with Colorado-based SCL Health, which led to the expansion of the CIO role to CDIO filled by Craig Richardville. Richardville stepped down in July, paving the way for Smith’s appointment.
QUOTES
“This opportunity is deeply meaningful to me,” said Smith. “I’m excited to simplify and improve the healthcare experience for patients, members, and caregivers.”
Intermountain Health president and CEO Rob Allen added, “Ryan is the right leader to help Intermountain navigate the complexities of healthcare and support our mission to enhance proactive care and improve the healthcare experience for all stakeholders.”
