Ohio-based Kettering Health faced a significant challenge when a cyberattack led to a system-wide IT outage starting on May 20. The health system had to quickly adapt to ensure care continuity for its patients. Elective surgeries were canceled, the call center and text messaging services were shut down, and other local hospitals had to assist in providing critical patient care.
Despite the obstacles, Kettering Health remained committed to its patients. The health system set up an emergency urgent clinical support line and temporary retail pharmacy contact numbers to keep communication channels open. Patients were able to resume radiation treatment thanks to the dedication of the technical and clinical staff.
Kettering Health’s CEO, Mike Gentry, expressed gratitude to the network of Greater Dayton and northern Cincinnati hospitals and health systems for their collaboration during this challenging time. While the cyberattack disrupted operations, the patient portal, including apps like MyChart, remained unaffected.
The attackers demanded a ransom payment within 72 hours, but Kettering Health focused on restoring its systems instead. The health system worked tirelessly to bring back online services, with radiation oncology technology being one of the first to be restored. Dr. Anthony Paravati and Sarah Macke emphasized the importance of providing life-saving treatment to patients, regardless of the day or time.
The ransomware attack not only affected Kettering Health’s IT systems but also led to a phone scam targeting patients for credit card information. The health system took immediate action to protect patient data and suspended certain billing activities.
In the face of cyber threats, the healthcare industry must prioritize patient safety and recovery efforts. John Riggi, a cybersecurity expert, highlighted the need for regional planning and mutual aid agreements to address the impact of highly disruptive ransomware attacks. Quick response and collaboration are essential to ensuring continuity of care during such incidents.
Kettering Health’s resilience and commitment to patient care were evident throughout the cyberattack crisis. By working together and leveraging resources effectively, the health system was able to overcome challenges and continue providing essential medical services to the community.
