Kraft Heinz is making waves in the plant-based dessert market with the launch of Jell-O Oat Milk Chocolate Pudding. This new snack is targeted towards consumers who are allergic to dairy, lactose intolerant, or simply prefer to avoid animal-based ingredients in their food.
The food giant has been expanding its presence in the plant-based space through a partnership with food tech company NotCo. Together, they have developed plant-based versions of popular products such as mac & cheese, mayonnaise, and Oscar Mayer hot dogs.
According to Kraft Heinz, the decision to enter the plant-based dessert market was driven by the growing demand for better options in this segment. With over 30% of Americans suffering from lactose intolerance and nearly two million children affected by milk allergies each year, there is a clear need for more inclusive and delicious plant-based dessert options.
Lauren Gumbiner, associate director of marketing desserts at Kraft Heinz, stated, “As our fans’ diets and preferences change, we’re evolving our portfolio alongside them. Our chocolate pudding is a timeless classic, and now, thanks to our lactose-free and vegan oat milk version, we’re excited to give more families the opportunity to enjoy it.”
While the chocolate oat-based pudding may not surpass the traditional Jell-O brand, it provides a tasty alternative for consumers looking to avoid dairy for health reasons or personal choice. Kraft Heinz chose oat milk for its creamy consistency and mild flavor, allowing Jell-O to recreate its signature taste and texture.
Oat milk has become a popular ingredient in plant-based food and beverages due to consumer perceptions around taste and sustainability. The oat-based food market was valued globally at $5.2 billion in 2023 and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 7% through 2030, according to Grand View Research.
Kraft Heinz is following in the footsteps of other major food companies like Unilever and Hershey, who have also introduced plant-based alternatives using oats. Ben & Jerry’s switched from almonds to oats as the primary ingredient in its plant-based offerings, while Hershey introduced oat-based confections under its namesake and Reese’s brands in 2023.
Overall, Kraft Heinz’s entry into the plant-based dessert market with Jell-O Oat Milk Chocolate Pudding reflects the growing demand for innovative and inclusive plant-based options in the food industry.
