Mars, the multinational company behind popular brands like Snickers, Twix, M&M’s, and more, has made significant strides in reducing its greenhouse gas emissions. According to the company’s 2024 sustainability report, Mars has successfully decreased its emissions across its supply chain by 16.4% compared to a 2015 baseline. This achievement includes a 1.9% reduction in emissions just last year.
One of the key strategies that Mars credits for this reduction is its increased focus on agricultural partnerships. By supporting over 60 climate-forward agricultural projects in 29 countries, Mars has not only lowered carbon emissions but also improved soil health, water quality, and water management techniques.
In addition to cutting emissions, Mars has recently launched the Mars Sustainable Investment Fund, a $250 million initiative aimed at financially supporting companies developing sustainability solutions. This fund will focus on addressing major industry challenges and promoting sustainability practices.
Despite these environmental efforts, Mars has seen significant growth in its business, with a 69% increase in annual net sales to around $55 billion since 2015. The company has also made strides in renewable energy, sourcing 58% of its electricity from renewable sources in 2024. Mars aims to achieve 100% renewable electricity usage by 2040 and has set targets to halve its emissions by 2030 and achieve net-zero status by 2050.
Furthermore, Mars has made progress in sustainable packaging, with 64.1% of its consumer-facing packaging designed to be reusable, recyclable, or compostable. The company is committed to integrating sustainability into its business practices and has expanded the number of senior executives with compensation tied to greenhouse emissions reductions.
Collaboration is key to Mars’ sustainability efforts, as the company recognizes the importance of working with partners across the supply chain, governments, and other industries. By embedding sustainability into its business decisions and investing in innovative solutions, Mars is paving the way for a more sustainable future in the food industry.
