Trust in Health Care Systems to Use Artificial Intelligence (AI) Responsibly
A recent study revealed that a significant number of adults lack trust in their health care systems when it comes to using artificial intelligence (AI) responsibly. According to the study published in JAMA Network Open, 65.8% of adults surveyed expressed low trust in their health care systems to utilize AI in a responsible manner. Additionally, 57.7% of respondents had low trust in their health care systems to ensure that AI tools would not cause harm to them.
The research, conducted by Jodyn Platt, Ph.D., from the Department of Learning Health Sciences at the University of Michigan Medical School, and Paige Nong, Ph.D., from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health, involved a survey of a nationally representative sample of adults from the National Opinion Research Center’s AmeriSpeak Panel between June and July 2023.
Interestingly, the study found that individuals who had higher levels of overall trust in their health care systems were more likely to believe that their providers would protect them from any potential harm caused by AI. However, female respondents were less likely than male respondents to trust their health care systems to use AI responsibly.
Surprisingly, the study also revealed that health literacy or knowledge about AI did not influence trust levels in AI. This suggests that building trust in the use of AI will require meaningful engagement and communication from health care systems.
The authors of the study recommend that health systems that adopt AI should improve their communication strategies about the AI tools used in patient care. Moreover, they suggest that future research should focus on monitoring trust levels over time and as individuals become more familiar with AI technology.

In conclusion, the findings of this study shed light on the importance of establishing trust in health care systems when it comes to the responsible use of AI. By addressing the concerns and perceptions of patients, health care providers can work towards building a more trusting relationship with their patients in the era of AI integration in health care.
