The deadline for employees to respond to the voluntary separation offer is set for Friday at 5 p.m. This initiative is part of the government’s plan to reduce the workforce within the HHS, one of the largest federal agencies with an annual budget of approximately $1.7 trillion dedicated to healthcare coverage for millions of Americans.
Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has hinted at significant staff cuts within the department. While he initially proposed clearing out all 600 employees at the NIH, he has since expressed a desire to remove certain workers from public health agencies, citing “bad decisions” made by some employees on nutrition guidelines.
The Trump administration, with the support of billionaire Elon Musk, has been actively pushing for the resignation of federal workers to streamline operations and reduce costs. Earlier this year, most federal employees were offered deferred resignation packages with eight months of pay. Additionally, thousands of probationary employees have been let go across various federal agencies, including the HHS.
This move to reduce the number of federal health workers comes at a critical time as the CDC is currently assisting with a measles outbreak in West Texas and New Mexico. Lawmakers are also deliberating deep cuts to Medicaid in the federal budget, adding to the urgency of restructuring within the HHS.
