Nestlé made headlines recently when it announced the immediate dismissal of its CEO, Laurent Freixe, for failing to disclose a romantic relationship with a subordinate. This decision came as a shock to many, especially considering the high-profile nature of Freixe’s position within the company. The news of Freixe’s dismissal follows closely on the heels of a scandal involving the CEO of tech company Astronomer, who was caught on camera at a Coldplay concert with his arms around the company’s chief people officer.
According to workplace expert Andy Challenger, unethical romantic relationships involving CEOs often lead to their termination. In a survey conducted by Zety, 75% of respondents reported that extramarital affairs between executives are common in the workplace. Additionally, 1 in 6 respondents claimed to be aware of or suspected such affairs within their own companies.
While workplace relationships are not uncommon, companies should require disclosure of any relationships between managers and subordinates to prevent conflicts of interest. CEOs, in particular, face stricter prohibitions on such relationships due to the power dynamics at play within organizations. The pairing of a CEO and head of HR was described by survey respondents as the “worst possible pairing,” especially in cases involving impropriety at the corporate level.
The specific details of Freixe’s relationship with the subordinate were not disclosed by Nestlé. Experts have noted that revelations of such relationships can erode trust and raise questions about ethical decision-making within an organization. Boards are more likely to remove CEOs for sexual misconduct rather than consensual relationships, according to data from Challenger. Since 2016, 40 CEOs have been ousted due to misconduct, while only 14 have been removed for inappropriate relationships during the same time period.
In light of these events, Challenger emphasized the importance of maintaining professional ethics within organizations. He highlighted the role of company leadership in setting the standard for ethical behavior and creating safe environments that foster innovation and progress. Ultimately, the handling of ethical issues at the top levels of an organization can have far-reaching implications for the entire company.
