The American Public Health Association is urging Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to step down from his federal post due to what they call “implicit and explicit bias and complete disregard for science.” Georges Benjamin, the executive director of the organization, expressed his concerns in a statement released on Wednesday, citing a number of issues with Kennedy’s actions since assuming the role just a few weeks ago.
Benjamin highlighted Kennedy’s stance on measles, fluoridation, FDA staffing, and other public health matters as causes for alarm. He emphasized that the concerns raised during Kennedy’s confirmation hearing have now materialized into significant staff reductions at key health agencies. Benjamin stated, “As a physician, I pledged to first do no harm and to speak up when I see harm being done by others. I ask my colleagues to join me and speak up. Secretary Robert Kennedy is a danger to the public’s health and should resign or be fired.”
In an interview with STAT, Benjamin explained that the decision to call for Kennedy’s resignation was made after discussions with APHA leadership and staff. This move marks a significant step for the 150-year-old nonprofit organization, which is the oldest and largest association of public health professionals globally.
Benjamin expressed his belief that Kennedy’s actions could have detrimental effects on public health, potentially leading to loss of lives. He criticized the recent job cuts at the FDA, CDC, and other health agencies as poor management that undermines the crucial work of these institutions in safeguarding public health.
Kennedy’s handling of the Texas measles outbreak and his promotion of unproven remedies like vitamin A were also scrutinized by Benjamin. Additionally, Kennedy’s decision to appoint a known vaccine critic to study the debunked link between childhood vaccines and autism raised further concerns within the APHA leadership.
As a former public health official, Benjamin stressed the importance of evidence-based decision-making in public health leadership. He highlighted the stark difference between Kennedy’s actions and the expected standard of a trusted health messenger.
Overall, the APHA’s call for Kennedy’s resignation reflects their deep-rooted concerns about the potential impact of his actions on public health. The organization stands firm in its stance that Kennedy’s leadership poses a significant risk to public health and safety.
