The latest release of the Data Usability Implementation Guide Version 2 by The Sequoia Project has been well-received after incorporating feedback from industry experts and the public. This guide, developed by the Interoperability Matters Data Usability Workgroup, aims to enhance data usability across various healthcare stakeholders involved in health information exchange.
The updated guide features seven key topics, including data provenance, effective use of codes, reducing duplicates, data integrity, tagging and searchability, narrative usability, and laboratory data interoperability. These additions are designed to provide practical implementation guidance for HIE vendors, implementers, networks, governance frameworks, and testing programs.
Didi Davis, Vice President of Informatics, Conformance, and Interoperability at The Sequoia Project, highlighted the importance of the revisions, stating that the guide now includes added guidance for receiving systems, advanced baseline requirements from USCDI V1 to V3, technology-agnostic requirements for HL7 standards, and a new category for laboratory data.
Dr. Adam Davis, a physician informaticist at Sutter Health and co-chair of the DUWG, emphasized the collaborative effort that went into revising the guide. The workgroup dedicated significant time and resources to collecting feedback from industry experts, particularly in the laboratory data space, to ensure the final version meets the needs of healthcare stakeholders.
The DUWG, established in 2020, focuses on data usability requirements for various types of information exchanges in healthcare. With over 360 members, the workgroup released its first Implementation Guide Version 1.0 in 2022, paving the way for semantic interoperability and improved data exchange workflows for clinicians.
The Sequoia Project, in collaboration with the American Health Information Management Association, is committed to making data exchange more computable and actionable through the Data Usability Taking Root initiative. This initiative, launched last year, aims to improve the quality and actionability of health information received by end-users within their workflows.
Looking ahead, Dr. William Gregg, Vice President of Clinical Data and Interoperability at HCA Healthcare and DUWG co-chair, expressed optimism about identifying and overcoming barriers to improving data usability. The ongoing efforts of the workgroup and industry collaborators will continue to drive advancements in health information exchange and interoperability.
