BNH Hospital Achieves Full Paperless Operation with Integrated HIS and EMR System
BNH Hospital, the first international private hospital in Thailand, has successfully transitioned to a fully paperless operation following the implementation of an integrated Hospital Information System (HIS) and Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system. Founded 127 years ago by King Rama V, BNH Hospital has evolved to become a leading provider of tertiary-level care, renowned for its Spine Center and Mother and Child care services.
25-year Journey Towards Digitization
BNH Hospital embarked on its digital transformation journey over two decades ago, initially adopting electronic records with the introduction of MedTrak in 1999. Subsequently, the hospital implemented the Health Object program in 2011, enabling outpatient diagnosis entry and medication orders for a significant period. In 2016, BNH Hospital began encouraging doctors to input medical records into the HIS, culminating in the adoption of the clinical documentation tool, Quippe by Medicomp Systems, in 2017.
Embracing a Comprehensive EMR System
Recognizing the limitations of its existing HIS, BNH Hospital made the strategic decision to transition to a more advanced EMR system. By partnering with InterSystems and IT consultant Lansing, the hospital successfully implemented InterSystems TrakCare, achieving 100% clinician adoption. This transition marked a significant milestone in BNH Hospital’s digital journey, enabling seamless integration of inpatient and outpatient records and enhancing data analysis capabilities.
Future Innovations and Expansion
With the successful implementation of the new EMR system, BNH Hospital is poised to leverage structured data for advanced analytics and AI-driven insights. The hospital aims to enhance closed-loop medication management, integrate mobile devices, and explore data analytics to further improve patient care and operational efficiency.
The Larger Trend of Digitization in Thai Healthcare
BNH Hospital’s embrace of TrakCare aligns with the broader trend of digitization in the Thai healthcare sector. As part of the Samitivej Hospital Group, BNH Hospital joins other leading healthcare facilities in standardizing data management through integrated HIS and EMR systems. The digitization efforts in Thailand’s private hospitals, such as Bangkok Hospital and Princ Hospital Suvarnabhumi, underscore the industry’s commitment to leveraging technology for enhanced patient care and operational excellence.
