EMC Healthcare, a prominent healthcare group in Indonesia, is on the brink of a major technological advancement almost a year after completing its EMR rollout. The company, known as Sarana Meditama Metropolitan, operates eight hospitals that offer a wide range of health services to the public.
In an effort to enhance its health record management system, EMC Healthcare has decided to upgrade to an AI-driven platform. This new system, referred to as a “reimagined EHR,” boasts features such as automated documentation through ambient audio recording, prepopulated follow-up actions for clinician review, and AI-assisted coding. InterSystems, the vendor behind this innovative technology, claims that EMC Healthcare will be the first hospital in the Asia-Pacific region to test out this cutting-edge AI system.
The journey to implementing EMR at EMC Healthcare began with the acquisition of several hospitals that were operating disparate health information systems independently. These outdated systems, mostly paper-based, presented numerous challenges for clinicians and staff, including storage issues, limited accessibility, risk of loss or damage, data sharing difficulties, lack of standardization, and inadequate data analysis capabilities.
To address these challenges, EMC Healthcare embarked on a digital transformation initiative, centralizing its health information systems with a single, integrated HIS. The EMR project commenced in November 2021 with the signing of a contract with InterSystems for the implementation of the TrakCare EMR system. Over the course of several months, the system was configured, tested, and rolled out to all eight hospitals by June 2024, with more than one million pages of medical records being digitized in the process.
One of the biggest hurdles faced during the EMR implementation was gaining acceptance from the hospital’s 700 specialist doctors. Through comprehensive training and ongoing support from a dedicated superuser team, the doctors were eventually onboarded onto the new system.
Looking towards the future, EMC Healthcare is now piloting an AI-driven EMR system in collaboration with InterSystems. The hospital president, Jusup Halimi, believes that AI will play a crucial role in providing predictive analytics, personalized treatment recommendations, and proactive alerts for potential complications. The AI system is expected to bring significant value to clinic consultation rooms, inpatient visits, and emergency departments by consolidating patient data into a structured summary for quick decision-making.
In addition to AI, EMC Healthcare is harnessing data through a data warehouse system to store and analyze patient, medical, clinical, and financial information. The hospital’s focus is on leveraging AI to enhance clinical decision support, streamline workflows, improve patient experiences, and facilitate medical research using EMR data.
Halimi emphasized the importance of user-friendly interfaces in an EMR system, highlighting the need for seamless integration into clinical workflows and a design that prioritizes user experience.
