Challenges and Strategic Investments in U.S. Health System Through 2030
Health system executives in the United States are anticipating a multitude of challenges and strategic investments as they look ahead to 2030. According to a recent study by Chartis Group, these executives are bracing for regulatory, financial, workforce, and consumer pressures, and are turning to technological advancements to enhance the caregiver experience and revolutionize the delivery of accessible and cost-effective care.
Anticipated Regulatory Changes
In a survey conducted for the 2025 health system CEO and CSO pulse study, 84% of health system executives expressed concerns that regulatory changes would have a significant impact on their organizations. The rapidly evolving regulatory landscape, payment reform, and the recruitment and retention of physicians and clinicians were identified as top challenges. Nearly half of the respondents were worried that an uncertain regulatory environment would negatively affect provider experiences.
Alignment with Physician Leaders
With payment reform looming large, 89% of surveyed executives are prioritizing better alignment with physician leaders. While 41% fear that these reforms could burden providers, more than half believe that public and private payer reforms will lead to improvements in healthcare quality, affordability, and health equity.
Technology as a Solution
Recognizing the need to address burdens on clinical workforces and enhance patient experiences, most health systems are investing in technology. A staggering 73% of respondents believe that technology will have a positive impact on workforce recruitment and retention, as well as patient retention through improved access, experience, and quality. Executives are optimistic about the potential of technological advancements, such as artificial intelligence, remote patient monitoring, and telehealth expansion, to navigate industry changes and positively impact access, patient experience, and provider experience.
Addressing Burnout
Since 2023, Chartis Group has been actively working with health system clients to combat clinician burnout through its Center for Burnout Solutions. By utilizing a burnout assessment tool and workforce metrics, the firm aims to reduce employee turnover and drive actionable improvements in healthcare settings.
Healthcare executives are hopeful that advancements in technology will play a crucial role in overcoming industry challenges and enhancing the overall healthcare experience for both providers and patients.
