There are now more things you can do at home by yourself that weren’t possible before, like attending a business meeting without pants. And now, you can add vaccinating yourself against the flu to that list. If you are in one of the 34 eligible states in the U.S., you can now get the FluMist Home vaccine from AstraZeneca delivered right to your doorstep. FluMist is a nasal spray vaccine that provides protection against influenza, offering an alternative to traditional needle injections.
FluMist Home Approved By FDA In September 2024
Although the FluMist nasal spray vaccine has been around since 2003, it was only approved for administration by healthcare professionals until September 2024. The FDA approval allowed for FluMist to be the first self-administered flu vaccine, making it easier for individuals to protect themselves. The nasal spray vaccine is the only one of its kind, offering a convenient and potentially less intimidating option for vaccination.
The quick FDA approval in 2024 didn’t give AstraZeneca enough time to launch FluMist Home for the previous flu season. However, the company is ready to roll out the home version for the upcoming flu season. Adults under 50 and parents of children over two can order the vaccine online, undergo a medical screening, and have the vaccine prescribed by a healthcare professional. Most commercial insurances should cover the vaccine, with a nominal shipping fee of $8.99.
Eligibility Criteria For FluMist Home
Adults over 50 and children under two are not eligible for FluMist Home, as the vaccine contains live, weakened flu virus strains. While these strains may offer stronger protection, individuals with weaker immune systems should exercise caution. The vaccine is currently available for residents of 34 states, with varying pharmacy laws dictating access to the home delivery option.
FluMist Home And Flu Vaccination Rates
Flu vaccines typically offer 30% to 60% protection, depending on the match with circulating strains. Increasing vaccination rates is crucial for achieving herd immunity and preventing the spread of the virus. With FluMist Home offering a more convenient option, it’s hoped that more individuals will choose to get vaccinated against the flu, ultimately benefiting both themselves and their communities.
Despite the importance of flu vaccination, data from the CDC shows that less than half of the U.S. population gets vaccinated each flu season. Factors such as convenience and access to vaccination services may contribute to low vaccination rates. The availability of FluMist Home could help address these barriers and potentially increase flu vaccination rates in the future.
